Beef Producers Get Poor Deal…
Its always been spoken around the farm gate that when you send an animal to a processor its not always guaranteed you’ll get the same animal back. Bit different when getting pigs processed, in NSW you need to slap band your pig with an ink tattoo and your property ID so its impossible not to get your meat back. Cattle are a lot different and what you get paid is also a lot different.
The Land ( Thursday 09 June 2016 ) MEAT graders in processors’ cool rooms are judge, jury and executioner when it comes to what beef producers get paid, says Australian Beef Association chief executive David Byard.
He said Australian beef producers were getting a “very, very poor deal”, not only from processors and the manner in which meat was graded and trimmed before being weighed, but also historical arrangements that precluded almost half a beast’s weight from being paid for
Australian Beef Association chief executive David Byard says in this day and age cutting-edge scanning and X-ray equipment should be used to determine what producers are paid. Photo RACHAEL WEBB.
